Position overview

You will be responsible for maintaining and enhancing the Lawcodes database, a key resource used by justice agencies throughout NSW and is critical to the efficient operation of the criminal justice system. The database is also used by related agencies who use data analytics to report upon the criminal justice system, where such reports can provide a coherent and factual foundation for future law reform and innovation.

This is a permanent opportunity either full time or 4 days/week; however, we would consider a 12-month secondment from another agency.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • a law degree with a minimum of 4 years in criminal law practice, criminal law research or criminal law academic or policy experience
  • knowledge of legislation-making process and principles of statutory interpretation
  • applied knowledge of criminal law and justice procedures
  • high level analytical, reasoning and communication skills
  • sound legal research skill including electronic research techniques/legal database proficiency.

As a Senior Research Officer, Lawcodes, you will:

  • create new codes for offences and penalties, amend  existing offence codes for both State and Commonwealth legislation and ongoing maintenance of same
  • review and maintain accuracy of the existing content of the Lawcodes database, including research of repealed legislation
  • liaise with other agencies in the continued use and enhancement of the Lawcodes database
  • develop solutions to address business and systems challenges.

Remuneration package from $110,266$122,058, plus employer’s contribution to superannuation and annual leave loading.
